Some customers may notice that the frequency of the -3 dB point on the DM12SE is relatively high compared to some other products. For example, the DM8SE -3 dB point is 60 Hz, while the -10 dB is 52 Hz, but on the DM12SE, the -3 dB point is 117 Hz, while the -10 dB point is 38. What is the reason for this?

In short, the DM12SE has a much more gradual, extended low-frequency roll-off as shown in the comparison below (light grey is the unprocessed response, dark grey is with our voicing):

The DM12SE goes significantly lower and has much less of a “bump” than the DM8SE. This decision was made during the voicing process to provide the most natural response given the amount of extension the DM12SE can provide. (With smaller loudspeakers with less extension, it is often beneficial to provide more of a “bump” at the bottom of the response to maximize the impact of the limited bass the speaker is able to provide.)

Overall, the DM12SE provides class-leading extension without a “hyped” low-frequency response. The result of this, however, is a higher -3 dB response point than the DM8SE but a much lower -10 dB response point.
